AKRONFugitive arrestedAn Akron man wanted in connection with Thursday’s slaying of a 19-year-old man on Beechwood Drive is in police custody.Charles L. Williams, 18, was escorted to the Akron Police Department on Friday afternoon by officers and members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force, according to police.Details of Williams’ arrest were not immediately available.Williams and Chevron Mapp, 18, of Akron, are charged in the death of Yusef El-Daniels, 19, who was shot in the torso following a fight over a gun about 1:30 a.m. Thursday on Beechwood Drive.El-Daniels died later at Akron General Medical Center.Mapp was shot in the arm during the altercation and was treated at Akron General Medical Center. He was being held in the Summit County Jail on charges of murder and aggravated robbery.Williams was wanted on charges of murder and felonious assault. He also was being held in the county jail.Elections complaintAKRON: The Ohio Elections Commission found probable cause this week in a complaint against an Akron City Council candidate.The commission will set a hearing in the complaint against David Reymann, a Ward 7 candidate.Tina Merlitti, the Ward 7 councilwoman, filed the complaint, saying Reymann made a false statement about her in campaign literature.On Friday, Reymann, who has run for council numerous times, submitted a letter to the Summit County Board of Elections saying he is dropping out of the race. The board will discuss how to handle his resignation at its Monday meeting.Ballots for the Sept. 13 primary already have been printed, and absentee voting has been going on for a few weeks.Warrant issuedAKRON: Police have issued an arrest warrant for an Akron man accused of shooting at another man Thursday morning.Kennard Gay, 26, of Nokomis Avenue, is wanted on charges of attempted murder and felonious assault for allegedly shooting at a man in a Ford F-150 pickup truck on McKinley Avenue.The 32-year-old driver was returning home when Gay jumped out of another vehicle and opened fire, police said. The driver was not hit by the multiple shots. He was injured by broken glass, police said.Anyone with information about Gay’s whereabouts is asked to call Akron police at 330-375-2490.Food racer in townAKRON: Chris Hodge, owner of the Cleveland-based food truck Hodge Podge, will be at the National Hamburger Festival this weekend at Lock 3 Park in downtown Akron.Hodge is a contestant on season two of the Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race, in which food truck owners from across the country compete for a $100,000 grand prize.The show debuted Aug. 14 and airs at 10 p.m. Sundays.Hodge and the truck will be at the hamburger festival from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.Employee robbedAKRON: An employee of an Akron discount store was forced at gunpoint inside the business and robbed Friday morning.The woman, 53, arrived for work at the Family Dollar on Merriman Road about 5:30 a.m. and was met in the parking lot by a man wielding a gun.She told police she was forced inside the store where the gunman demanded cash. The robber left with about $500, according to the report.Anyone with information is asked to call Akron police at 330-375-2490.CUYAHOGA FALLSPorn charge filedCUYAHOGA FALLS: A Cuyahoga Falls man is facing child pornography charges after his arrest Friday morning.Timothy Cherveny, 26, was arrested at his Maitland Avenue home by Falls police, who were acting on information from the federal Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. He is charged with pandering sexually oriented materials involving minors, a felony.According to police, Cherveny disseminated child pornography from the address.Officers seized several computers and other storage devices from the home.MEDINA COUNTYMarijuana foundSHARON TWP.: Agents from the Medina County Drug Task Force on Wednesday discovered 58 marijuana plants growing in a cornfield in Sharon Township.The plants were discovered during a random check of the area, the task force said in a news statement issued Friday afternoon. The marijuana, upon reaching full maturation, would be valued at approximately $75,000.The task force said the discovery is the largest of outdoor marijuana plants in Medina County since 2009, when 150 plants were found in a cornfield in Guilford Township.No arrests have been made. An investigation is ongoing to determine the plants’ owner.NORTHEAST OHIOGrades comingThe Ohio Department of Education officially will release state report cards for schools, districts and charter schools at 10 a.m. Wednesday.The department will release its official data to the media Monday to allow time for analysis. Some districts already have announced their results at school board meetings, and some media outlets are reporting ratings before the official release date.The Akron Beacon Journal will publish a complete analysis and graphic display of report card data next week for online and print editions of the newspaper when the results are officially released.
